Newton’s Pendulum Bridge Installation

This public-art concept transforms an existing steel bridge into an interactive kinetic sculpture inspired by Newton’s cradle. Five hollow metal spheres are suspended in a row from reinforced steel cables beneath the bridge. Visitors can pull one of the outer spheres back using an attached rope and release it, transferring momentum through the sequence and sending the sphere at the opposite end into motion.

The installation is designed to make the principles of momentum and energy conservation physically visible and accessible. Rather than altering the bridge’s existing structure, the suspended spheres emphasize the bridge as a monumental sculpture within the surrounding natural landscape.

Created as an educational and participatory artwork, the concept invites both adults and students to experience physics through direct interaction. The spheres would be positioned centrally above the water, with structural engineers and metal fabricators consulted to address weight, safety, suspension and long-term maintenance requirements.
